Reimaging heritage with Baithak

With a vision to breathe new life into an aging structure, the Saligao renovation project reimagines a forgotten house as a vibrant community space that balances tradition and modern utility.

This once-neglected Goan home now stands as a testament to thoughtful design and adaptive reuse. Nestled in the heart of Saligao, the transformation began with a bold reconfiguration: a road-facing room was transformed into an open courtyard, inviting natural light into the linear layout and creating a serene, inward-looking space.

The design preserves the soul of the original structure while introducing contemporary elements that enhance functionality. Two expansive halls, framed by graceful arches, serve as multifunctional community areas, offering flexibility for gatherings, workshops, or quiet retreats. The interiors feature a seamless finish of IPS, with a vibrant yellow gracing the private rooms and soothing green-grey tones in the common areas, echoing the hues of the surrounding landscape.

Built-in seating, crafted with precision, adds both functionality and sculptural beauty to the space. In the main hall, a cleverly integrated mezzanine creates a dedicated yoga area, with a cozy study nook tucked beneath it—perfectly combining form and purpose.

The original entrance has been reimagined as a private sit-out for the guest bedroom, an intimate retreat that retains a sense of history. Meanwhile, new entryway enhances access to the communal areas, streamlining the flow between the indoor and outdoor spaces.

Every design decision in this project speaks of restraint and respect—respect for the house’s heritage, for its setting, and for the needs of the community it now serves. The result is a space that feels rooted yet revitalized, where the echoes of its past resonate harmoniously with its vibrant new purpose.
